Strengthening our Community

Pittsburgh Perl Workshop 2013 ClassroomEnsuring the future of Perl requires a strong community. The foundation of this community is the combined effort of developers, event coordinators, educators, volunteers, and sponsors like you. The Perl Foundation exists to bring together each of these necessary partners so Perl can strategically evolve to meet the needs of business and academia. Through the community advocacy program, The Perl Foundation is reaching out to local interest groups and providing support to keep Perl running strong on all levels.

Bizowie

“Events, such as the YAPC and the Pittsburgh Perl Workshop, are vital to the Perl community. In fact, often these events are what bring the community aspect to Perl. Since our business depends on the health of the Perl language, we view it as imperative to invest into the Perl community. Sponsorship provides us with an opportunity to not only connect with developers, but to actively invest in Perl's future.”

Goals

Conferences

This year, The Perl Foundation will host YAPC::NA and will also play a key role in providing financial and infrastructure support to several Perl Monger groups as they host Perl workshops, including: Perl Oasis, DC-Baltimore Perl Workshop, and the Pittsburgh Perl Workshop.

$100,000

Grants

The Perl Foundation provides funding directly in support of projects that benefit Perl users. Our traditional grants program provides a means for developers to create free and open-source software and libraries built on top of Perl. Meanwhile, the Perl 5 Core Grants allow for top developers to focus on specific needs of the language itself.

$100,000

Training

The Perl Foundation will take new steps to reach out to the community, training new programmers in Perl. The Perl Foundation will create an online beginner video training course and provide beginner training scholarships.

$25,000

Outreach Program for Women

In 2013, The Perl Foundation provided a grant to the Outreach Program for Women, pairing a Perl mentor with an aspiring student. The program was successful because it improved Perl and added another member to the Perl Community. The Perl Foundation will sponsor two students in 2014.

$15,000

Community

The Perl Foundation will host events across the world to encourage the formation of new local groups as well as re-invigorate existing groups. They will also host the very first Perl Community Summit, an event specifically for issues related to the Perl Community.

$15,000

Marketing

Reaching out beyond the Perl community is a very important function of The Perl Foundation. Through online efforts and open-source conferences, The Perl Foundation will continue to advocate Perl to the world.
